Speakup Modified Fedora

The SpeakupModified supports yum to help you keep abreast of the latest in Speakup Modified packages the easy Fedora way. To start using yum to install or update your SpeakupModified rpms, first become root on your Fedora computer and issue the following command:

rpm -iv http://speakupmodified.org/speakupmodified-release.rpm

You will need to install our GPG key on your Fedora computer in order to install our RPMs. Become root and issue the following command:

rpm --import http://speakupmodified.org/RPM-GPG-KEY-speakupmodified

Please note that you need issue the above commands only once. Thereafter, you can simply update your installation as described below. However, you will always need to become root, (or invoke the commands below using sudo), when updating your installation.

Update Everything

The easiest way to update all the packages on your system that come from the SpeakupModified is to issue a command like the following:a

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=speakupmodified upgrade *

Similarly you can upgrade a specific SpeakupModified package with a command like the following:

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=speakupmodified [package]

For example:

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=speakupmodified upgrade asterisk*

To learn about all of the packages available from the SpeakupModified yum repository issue a command like the following:

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=speakupmodified info * |more

Special Note For TTSynth Users

Users of the premier text to speech synthetic voice for Linux, TTSynth, should be certain to install our build of gnome-speech in order to use TTSynth with Orca:

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=speakupmodified upgrade gnome-speech*

In addition users of 64-bit Fedora (and our 64-bit gnome-speech) need to separately install the 32-bit gnome-speech-ibmtts drivers in order to use TTSynth with Orca:

rpm -Uv http://SpeakupModified.Org/gnome-speech-ibmtts.rpm

Updating Orca

We are no longer building Orca packages because these are consistently provided by Red Hat through their Fedora package repositories. Thus, keeping your Orca up to date is also just as easy with a command like the following:

yum upgrade orca

On the other hand, if you want to stay closer to the very latest development versions of Orca, use a command like the following:

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=development upgrade orca

About Upgrading Kernels

We strongly recommend users put the following directive in their /etc/yum.conf files:

exclude=kernel*

This directive prevents stock Fedora kernels from overwriting your SpeakupModified kernel. However, this also requires you to explicitly request a newer SpeakupModified kernel with a command like the following:

yum --disablerepo='*' --enablerepo=speakupmodified upgrade kernel*
